As Iran holds funerals procession for Ali Khamenei, Israel bombs
Millions of Iranians poured into the streets of Tehran, the Iranian capital, for the funeral procession of their leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Officials have described it as the largest public gathering in the country's modern history.
The procession also included the flag-draped coffins of several members of the late Ayatollah Khamenei's family, who were killed alongside him on the first day of the recent US-Israeli attack on February 28. According to organizers, funeral ceremonies for Ayatollah Khamenei and his family will continue on Tuesday in the holy city of Qom. Additional farewell and funeral events are scheduled for Wednesday in the Iraqi cities of Najaf and Karbala.
The final funeral rites are set to take place on Thursday in the northeastern Iranian city of Mashhad, where Ayatollah Khamenei will be buried at the shrine of Imam Reza, the eighth Shia Imam, in accordance with Khamenei's will.
As Iranians were attending the funeral, Israel continued its attacks on Lebanon and Gaza. According to reports, Israel struck a facility that provided safe drinking water to thousands of families in Gaza City. Middle East Eye reported on Monday that the attack, east of Gaza City, "struck a gathering of displaced people in front of a water refilling station," killing two people as Israeli forces shelled the city early Monday. Israeli strikes on southern Lebanon have also continued, during which four people were killed and heavy damage been reported.
