Israel Drops Flare Bombs on a Forest in Southern Lebanon, Seeking to Destroy It
On Sunday Israeli forces deployed incendiary flare bombs over the Aita al-Jabal forest in southern Lebanon’s Bint Jbeil district, igniting multiple fires, according to Lebanon’s National News Agency (NNA). The report detailed that the aerial munitions, typically used for illumination or marking targets, set the dry vegetation ablaze, threatening local wildlife and agricultural land in the heavily forested area.
Analysts believe Israel’s goal is to make southern Lebanon uninhabitable. The destruction of forests is part of this strategy, making it even harder for residents to stay.
In a separate and parallel incident, the NNA also reported that the Israeli military carried out a “massive explosion” in the southern town of Houla, located in the Marjeyoun district. The agency did not immediately specify the cause of the blast, but it marks a significant escalation in the area, which has seen sporadic exchanges of fire between Israeli forces and Hezbollah fighters since the outbreak of the Gaza conflict in October 2023.
