Iran tells Europe: “War and terror come at a price.”

In a post on X on Friday, Mohsen Rezaei, the secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, said that European governments supported US and Israel’s actions against Iran and now complaining about the economic consequences of the war with Iran.

“Just yesterday, Europe took pride in the dirty work of the Zionist regime. Today, it’s whining about billions the war with Iran is costing it,” Rezaei wrote. “When you cheered on war crimes, did you think the fallout wouldn’t hit you, too? War and terror come at a price. Now it’s your turn to pay.”

His comments came as European leaders voiced concern over the conflict’s mounting economic impact, particularly the rise in energy costs. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said on Friday that higher energy prices linked to the war had cost Europe more than €100 billion, about $112 billion, over the past eight months.

Speaking to reporters in Seoul, Merz said Germany was coordinating and intensifying diplomatic efforts to end the fighting. He said the conflict had imposed a substantial burden on European businesses and consumers, reinforcing the economic case for a swift resolution.

“Businesses and consumers in Europe have paid more than 100 billion euros extra because energy has become more expensive as a result of this conflict,” Merz said. “We therefore also have an economic interest in bringing this conflict to an end as quickly as possible.”

Merz also argued that the fighting could not be brought to a close through military means alone, calling for dialogue: “This conflict cannot be resolved militarily.”
