Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) spokesman, General Hossein Mohebbi, said in an interview with The Tehran Times that if the United States attacks Iran again, Iran will respond in full, and that its response would trigger a global energy crisis.
Mohebbi noted that the U.S. waged its previous war against Iran with all its might, but is now in no position to launch a new military assault that would yield a different outcome. He added that Iran’s retaliatory strikes rendered most U.S. bases in the gulf region inactive, describing American forces as exhausted and worn out, and noting that they have withdrawn hundreds of kilometers from Iran’s borders.
"From a technical and military standpoint, the U.S. lacks the capability to start a new conflict. However, with the U.S. midterm elections approaching, Washington may seek to manufacture some achievements," Mohebbi said.
"We do not rule out any possibilities and are prepared to respond. This time, our response will be much more forceful. Even if the U.S. action is limited, the world will face a serious energy crisis."
The U.S. and Israel jointly attacked Iran on February 28, in a campaign that lasted 40 days. As a consequence, Iran closed the Strait of Hormuz to shipping, a chokepoint through which more than 20% of the world’s oil passes. This rose up oil prices and caused significant problems for the global economy. Iran has repeatedly warned that if the U.S. attacks again, particularly targeting Iran’s energy infrastructure, Tehran will destroy all oil facilities across the region, potentially leading to a severe global energy crisis.
