The US defense industry (Pentagon) might struggle to meet its January 2027 deadline for rare earth elements

Starting January 2027, the entire U.S. defense apparatus will be prohibited from utilizing any rare earth materials sourced from China. This impending ban places immense pressure on Washington to rapidly secure alternative, domestically sourced supplies of these vital elements.

With less than eight months remaining before this deadline takes effect, U.S. authorities are raising urgent alarms. The Department of Defense has taken a leading role in this effort, issuing a strong call to action to bolster America’s rare earths supply chain. This call is not merely rhetorical; it is backed by formal communications directed at key players in the domestic rare earths industry.

One such communication is a memorandum sent to REalloys , a company active in rare earth materials. The memorandum emphasizes the critical need for the United States to secure and expand its domestic production capabilities in light of China’s tightening control over global supplies. It highlights the strategic urgency of this mission, given the Pentagon’s forthcoming prohibition on Chinese-origin rare earths.

However China’s head start is immense and  time is short. Can US prove it that it can break free from Chinese magnets in less than 8 month— or discover the hard way that bold laws are easier written than executed.
