President Putin Visits China as the World Faces an Energy Shortage Crisis

President Vladimir Putin of Russia arrives  in China, amid a global energy shortage crisis that has been intensifying over recent month due to the war between US and Iran. This visit is not only a diplomatic gesture but also a strategic move in the context of global energy markets, geopolitical alliances, and economic stability.

The shortage of oil has led to soaring energy prices, inflationary pressures worldwide, and increased urgency among major economies to secure reliable energy supplies.
Putin’s visit aims to deepen Russia-China energy ties, particularly focusing on increasing Russia’s energy exports to China. Russia, one of the world’s largest producers of oil and natural gas, views China as a critical partner to diversify its energy export markets, especially amid Western sanctions and geopolitical frictions.
During a previous visit in September 2025, Russia and China agreed to build the “Power of Siberia 2” gas pipeline, a massive infrastructure project intended to transport Russian natural gas directly to China. However, final agreements on pricing and volumes have yet to be fully settled. Putin’s 2026 visit is expected to push forward these negotiations, aiming for a substantial increase in gas exports that could help alleviate China’s energy shortages.
Beyond energy, the visit underscores the broader strategic partnership between Russia and China. Both nations are positioning themselves as counterweights to Western influence, particularly the United States and its allies. Strengthening economic ties, including energy, trade, and technology, is a key pillar of this partnership.
