Russia launched a large-scale retaliatory strike on Ukraine's capital overnight into Thursday, a Ukrainian drone attack on Russia that had killed numerous civilians. The assault, which employed ballistic and cruise missiles as well as drones, killed at least 17 people and injured scores more, as powerful explosions shook Kyiv for hours.

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed that the attack left17 dead and at least 90 others injured in the city. Tymur Tkachenko, head of the Kyiv City Military Administration, reported damage at 30 locations across the capital, primarily residential buildings and civilian infrastructure.

In response, Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova asserted that the overnight strikes targeted military and strategic sites used by the Kyiv regime to kill civilians. She wrote on her Telegram channel: "Even Klitschko managed to put it clearly this time: 'It was a Kiev. The largest attack.' I can add only one thing: it was not directed against peaceful Kiev, but against military and strategic targets used by the Kiev regime to kill civilians."
