Spirit Airlines Lawyer Cites High Jet Fuel Prices as Sole Reason for Carrier Shutdown

A lawyer for the now-defunct Spirit Airlines told a US bankruptcy court that surging jet-fuel costs left the low-cost carrier with “no remaining way out” of bankruptcy, a situation that ultimately forced the airline to halt operations. Counsel said the carrier is seeking the court’s approval for an expedited sale of assets and retention bonuses for its remaining employees.

At a hearing, Marshall Huebner said Spirit was notified Thursday afternoon that a proposed government financing initiative would not proceed. Huebner also offered an apology to customers on the airline’s behalf.
