Russia Implements Export Restrictions on Helium Due to Worldwide Shortage

April 20

The Russian government has imposed export restrictions on helium until the end of 2027, following a global shortage triggered by the war in Iran. This rare gas is essential for various applications, including semiconductor manufacturing, medical imaging, rocket fuel, and welding.

According to 2025 data from the U.S. Geological Survey, Russia ranks as the world’s third-largest helium producer, after Qatar and the United States. Helium is produced as a byproduct of natural gas processing, which has been significantly disrupted in Qatar due to the conflict in Iran, causing a sharp increase in spot prices.
