Trump claims Iran requested a meeting in Doha on Tuesday, but Iran says no meeting is imminent

U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Monday that Iran has requested a bilateral meeting with American officials, scheduled to take place in Doha, the capital of Qatar, on Tuesday. The claim, delivered in an all-caps social media post, directly contradicts Iran’s official position and has thrown the status of U.S.-Iran backchannel diplomacy into confusion.

“Iran has requested a meeting. It will take place tomorrow in Doha,” Trump wrote  in his Monday evening post, making the assertion without offering additional details, such as the level of representation or the agenda. The post comes amid heightened tensions between the two countries and recent  tit-for-tat retaliatory actions.

On Monday, Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei firmly dismissed reports technical talks between Iran and the United States are scheduled for later week, stating that Tehran has yet to be satisfied that the terms of the Iran-US Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) have been fully implemented.

"Iran's current priority is to ensure the implementation of the provisions of the MoU, and we are seriously pursuing our demands in this regard," Baghaei told reporters. He emphasized that any move toward launching negotiations on a final agreement between the two countries remains conditional. Specifically, he said that such talks are contingent upon the initiation and continued implementation of paragraphs 1 4, 5, 10, and 11" of the MoU.

According to Baghaei, Iran is pressing the United States to uphold its commitments under these key provisions, which include the provisional lifting of sanctions on Iranian oil exports and the release of Iran's blocked funds abroad. These steps, he indicated, are seen by Tehran as essential benchmarks of good faith before any broader diplomatic engagement can proceed.

Addressing reports of a planned Iranian delegation visit to Doha, the capital of Qatar, later this week, Baghaei clarified that the trip is strictly related to efforts aimed at securing the release of Iran's frozen assets. He explicitly stated that the delegation will not hold talks with U.S. negotiators during the visit, further underscoring Iran's position that no direct discussions with Washington are imminent.
