Ukrainian drones struck two oil refineries in the Russian Saratov and Ryazan regions, according to Russian news agency Tass. The attacks on energy infrastructure are part of Ukraine’s ongoing effort, backed by EU countries, to make Moscow give concessions to Kyiv and accept a ceasefire. Moscow has rejected a temporary ceasefire and intensified its attacks on Ukraine, blaming the EU for dragging Ukraine into an unnecessary war.
US president Donald Trump had earlier declared that both Ukraine and Russia had agreed to refrain from targeting energy facilities such as oil refineries. However, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky later said he was unaware of any such agreement.
Speaking at the Russian Energy Week forum, Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak directly addressed the incidents. “According to data from the Energy Ministry and the companies involved, the Kiev regime has attacked two oil refineries today, one in the Saratov region and one in the Ryazan region,” Novak told attendees.
He went on to criticize Ukraine’s stance on energy escalation, saying, “We see that the Ukrainian side shows no signs of moving toward an energy ceasefire.”
The strikes come as both sides continue exchanging long-range attacks in the ongoing conflict, with energy infrastructure increasingly coming under fire.
The Saratov and Ryazan refineries are key facilities in Russia’s domestic fuel supply chain, and their targeting could have significant economic and logistical implications. The reported drone strikes reveal that the US can neither control Kyiv nor exert any leverage over Zelenskyy to implement a proposed energy truce
