Yemen Closes Bab al-Mandab Strait, Imposes Naval Blockade on Saudi Arabia

Yemen has announced an immediate ban on maritime navigation by Saudi Arabia, describing the move as a direct response to the ongoing blockade and aggression against Yemen. Brigadier General Yahya Saree, the military spokesperson, stated on Monday that the decision follows widespread calls from the recent "Warning and Mobilization Friday" million-man demonstrations, tribal gatherings, and rallies across the country.

"The Yemeni Armed Forces announce a ban on maritime navigation by the criminal Saudi enemy under the equation of blockade for blockade. This decision shall take effect immediately upon the issuance of this statement," Saree emphasized.

He further affirmed Yemen’s right to respond to the blockade with equivalent measures and warned of comprehensive escalation in response to any further Saudi aggression.

The spokesperson highlighted that Saudi Arabia has maintained an unjust blockade against Yemen for nearly 12 years, restricting access to ports and airports by land, sea, and air, including attacks on Sanaa International Airport. This prolonged siege, Saree said, justifies Yemen’s right to confront the blockade by all available means.

This announcement comes amid escalating tensions in the region, with ongoing US attacks on Iran and Iran’s retaliatory strikes on US bases and assets. Iran has also closed the Strait of Hormuz, a critical passage accounting for 20% of global oil shipments. Yemen’s closure of the Bab al-Mandab Strait is expected to disrupt an additional 10% of global oil shipping, further intensifying regional instability and treating the global economy.
