Ukraine’s electricity system has suffered fresh and extensive damage, Volodymyr Zelensky said, as continued strikes further strain the country’s already weakened energy network.
“Extensive damage to the power grid and electricity transmission facilities,” Zelensky wrote on Telegram, without providing a detailed assessment of the affected sites or the scale of the destruction.
The latest damage has intensified an electricity shortage that has persisted for a third consecutive day. Authorities have introduced scheduled power cuts in several regions, while emergency outages have been imposed in Kyiv and elsewhere to prevent damaged equipment and overloaded transmission networks from failing completely. Ukrainian officials say repair crews are working to restore supplies wherever security conditions allow.
The disruptions come amid a renewed campaign against Ukraine’s energy infrastructure. Russian strikes have repeatedly targeted power plants, substations, transmission lines and other facilities needed to generate and distribute electricity. Russia says that they are targeting Ukraine’s energy infrastructure in response to Ukrainian drone attacks on Russian energy networks and refineries.
Kyiv has been among the areas most severely affected. Power cuts in the capital reportedly lasted as long as eight hours on Wednesday, while emergency blackouts were introduced because of overloading and damage in the high-voltage network.
Electric public transport and metro operations were disrupted, and several districts experienced interruptions to their water supply after pumping equipment lost electricity. The problems are especially serious in Kyiv’s high-rise residential areas, where power is needed to operate elevators, heating systems, water pumps and communications equipment.
